web*STAR Policies
  1. Lab use The web*STAR lab is for Web page design/development only. During peak usage, lab seating will be determined by the following criteria:

    1. Is the work you are doing a Web project for which you are using Web-specific software?

    2. Are you here for help with an upload?

    3. Can the software you need be found anywhere else? For example:

      1. Photoshop, Illustrator, other graphics and multimedia applications, and scanners, are also available at STAR

      2. PowerPoint is available in at least a dozen other places on campus where Microsoft products are in use.

      3. Netscape Composer is available on any computer with Netscape Communicator. Preliminary work can be done in many of the labs on campus. However, if you find you need help with Composer, web*STAR is the place.

If the work you are doing can be supported in one of the other labs, please take advantage of that during crunch periods.

  2. Do not load software on computers; Do not leave your data files on computer hard drives or desktops. Unsanctioned software will be removed, and user files will be deleted after lab closing. web*STAR is not responsible for loss of data stored on lab computers.

  3. Report problems with computers to lab mentor.

  4. Copyrights and "Fair Use" The 1997 Web Copyright Act makes no provision for "fair use" and re-publishing someone else's work on a web page may result in hefty fines and/or a jail term. With digital signatures, it is now much easier to track down infringements and prosecute. Copyrighted materials on the Internet are considered intellectual property: follow directions given on a web site for use of graphics or other materials, or contact copyright holders to get permission to use copyrighted material. For more information, please check the following: DoIT Copyright Basics or GMU Copyright Information

  5. Please do not bring food into the lab. Drinks should be in covered containers, and placed on the floor, or away from the working surfaces.

  6. Mentors are not there to do the work for you, only to help you solve problems you may run into while working on a project.
